Seismic observations of transient subglacial water-flow beneath MacAyeal Ice Stream, West Antarctica

چکیده
[1] New seismic observations of harmonic tremors beneath MacAyeal Ice Stream, West Antarctica are reported. Each of the two tremor events that we recorded during a six week period had sustained arrival of 3 Hz energy for approximately 10 minutes. During that time the source location migrated a few kilometers. The harmonic nature of the tremors is interpreted as the result of resonance in subglacial water-filled cracks and conduits. The duration, monochromatic nature, and movement of the tremor indicate that the source mechanism is likely flow in the subglacial water system resulting from the discharge from a small subglacial lake. Our results suggest that the subglacial water system produces repeated, small outburst floods, with possible implications for ice-stream dynamics. Citation: Winberry, J. P., S. Anandakrishnan, and R. Modeling 5 Years of Subglacial Lake Activity in the MacAyeal Ice Stream (Antarctica) Catchment Through Assimilation of ICESat Laser Altimetry
Subglacial lakes beneath Antarctica’s fast-moving ice streams are known to undergo 1 km volume changes on annual timescales. Focusing on the MacAyeal Ice Stream (MacIS) lake system, we create a simple model for the response of subglacial water distribution to lake discharge events through assimilation of lake volume changes estimated from Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser a...
متن کاملIntegrating satellite observations with modelling: basal shear stress of the Filcher-Ronne ice streams, Antarctica.
Using inverse methods constrained by recent satellite observations, we have produced a comprehensive estimate of the basal shear stress beneath the Filchner-Ronne ice streams. The inversions indicate that a weak bed (approx. 4-20kPa) underlies much of these ice streams. Compared to the Ross ice streams, the distribution of weak subglacial till is more heterogeneous, with 'sticky spots' providin...

Satellite laser altimeter elevation profiles from 2003 to 2006 collected over the lower parts of Whillans and Mercer ice streams, West Antarctica, reveal 14 regions of temporally varying elevation, which we interpret as the surface expression of subglacial water movement. Vertical motion and spatial extent of two of the largest regions are confirmed by satellite image differencing. A major, pre...
متن کاملCauses of sudden, short-term changes in ice-stream surface elevation
[1] Recent satellite-borne observations of Antarctica’s ice streams show sudden, spatially confined surface-elevation changes that are interpreted as caused by subglacial water movement. Using a numerical model of idealized ice-stream flow coupled to various simple treatments of subglacial bed conditions, we demonstrate that ice-stream flow dynamics significantly modulates the surface-elevation...
متن کاملBacteria beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet.
Subglacial environments, particularly those that lie beneath polar ice sheets, are beginning to be recognized as an important part of Earth's biosphere. However, except for indirect indications of microbial assemblages in subglacial Lake Vostok, Antarctica, no sub-ice sheet environments have been shown to support microbial ecosystems. Here we report 16S rRNA gene and isolate diversity in sedime...
